What’s New in Verso

Plain-language notes for every update. Clear explanations of new capabilities, speed improvements, and fixes for everyday writing.

Verso 2.0.3

Latest Release

Untitled documents you can start typing in at once, a solid window chrome, and a fix for the freeze when a large watched folder changes.

  • New Write first, save anywhere: a new document opens ready to type. Save or Save As opens the system dialog and the file goes wherever you choose.
  • Improved Solid window chrome: sidebar and toolbar now render on solid design tokens, so wallpaper no longer bleeds through the window.
  • Fixed Freeze on large folders: changes inside a big watched folder, such as your home folder, no longer lock up the window while Verso rescans it.

Verso 1.0.3

Quick access from the macOS menu bar, refreshed document icons for clarity in Finder, and smoother folder monitoring.

  • New Menu bar quick-access — A compact menu bar icon lets you view current document word counts and open your workspace with one click.
  • Improved High-resolution document icons — Markdown files associated with Verso now display crisp, distinctive icons across light and dark modes in macOS Finder.
  • Fixed External drive monitoring — When editing files stored on external SSDs or network mounts, folder changes now sync instantly without manual refresh.

Verso 1.0.2

Typing latency reductions on high refresh rate displays and streamlined document previews.

  • Improved ProMotion 120 Hz responsiveness — Reduced input latency when drafting long manuscripts on MacBook Pro ProMotion displays.
  • Improved Document rendering — Text contrast and line spacing adjusted for improved reading comfort during long writing sessions.
  • Fixed Code block scrolling — Long fenced code blocks in documents no longer cause jitter when scrolling past quickly.

Verso 1.0.1

Faster folder loading for large directories and seamless keyboard navigation.

  • Improved Large folder scanning — Opening folders with thousands of Markdown documents is now twice as fast.
  • Improved Keyboard navigation — Pressing arrow keys moves focus cleanly between the sidebar folder tree and the editor pane.
  • Fixed File renaming — Renaming files with special characters now updates the open tab title immediately.

Verso 1.0.0

The initial release of Verso Markdown for macOS and Linux.

  • New Folder-first editing — Open any folder on your hard drive. No proprietary database, no import step, and no vendor lock-in.
  • New Zero telemetry — No user tracking, no accounts, and no network traffic. Your files stay strictly on your computer.
  • New Universal cross-platform access — One purchase provides native macOS builds and Linux packages (AppImage and Debian package for x86_64 and arm64).

Marlin 2.0.0

In-place editing for multi-gigabyte files, zero-RAM piece tables, and atomic file saving.

  • New In-place huge file editing — Multi-gigabyte files are no longer read-only. Double-click or press Return to edit lines, or Delete to remove rows, with full undo and redo.
  • New Zero-memory piece table — Edits are recorded in lightweight memory structures over the memory-mapped file; a 5 GB log file edits smoothly without exhausting your system memory.
  • New Atomic stream saving — Modified files stream to a temporary staging file in 4 MB chunks and swap in atomically, preserving Finder tags, attributes, and file permissions.
  • Improved Mixed line ending preservation — Preserves Windows (CRLF) and Unix (LF) line endings line-by-line automatically.
  • Fixed Pane resize cursor — Resolved an issue where the splitter cursor could remain active after resizing editor split panes.
